Are you a candidate for varicose vein treatment? There are many different options for the treatment of varicose veins. Some of these options are conservative, meaning no invasive procedures, that can also be performed at home, which include elevation, weight loss, exercise and stretching, avoidance of heat, compression stockings, changing positions routinely, and wearing proper shoes. Other options can either be minimally invasive or invasive, with the main options are vein stripping, sclerotherapy, and endovascular laser therapy (EVLT).

When is the right time to look at treatment options for varicose veins and are you a candidate?

When is the right time to look at the procedural options for addressing varicose veins? This of course can be a very personal decision for most people, as some individuals would opt to seek treatment earlier than others. Some important things to consider when making the decision is :

  • How your daily pain is affecting your life. If you have difficulty at work completing your tasks, are unable to enjoy normal activities, and if you are always trying to conceal your legs due to their appearance, it is likely time to look at other treatment options.

  • Another way is persistent symptoms despite judicious use of exercise, weight loss, elevation, and compression garments.

  • Lastly, if you have had any complications from having varicose veins, such as skin infections, hardened skin, wounds that have healed slowly, or blood clots in the varicose veins, this may be an indication to look at the procedural options for varicose vein surgery.

Who may NOT be a candidate for varicose vein treatment?

Not everyone that decides to have varicose vein procedures are able to pursue this option. There are several different conditions that may preclude the ability to have a varicose vein surgery or procedure.

  1. A current deep venous thrombosis will usually prevent having a varicose vein procedure, but this is also largely depends on where the clot is located and, at times, the procedure may still be able to be performed.

  2. Some patients also have disease within their arteries, leading to poor blood flow into the legs with weak pulses and this would prevent a varicose vein procedure.

  3. Individuals with an increased bleeding risk due to use of blood thinning medications, like Xarelto and Coumadin for other medical conditions, are not typically candidates for varicose veins procedures.

  4. Those who are bedridden or are unable to walk are also not candidates, due to the need to walk after the procedure for adequate healing.

  5. Pregnant women are unable to have the procedure during pregnancy, but may be a candidate after the baby is born, if they are still suffering from varicose veins.
